I was skeptical going in. I think the first film is a horror masterpiece. I'd even say it's almost as good as "Alien." It's certainly the closest thing we have to something as scary and as well written and something that's fresh and new. We know all about Xenomorphs, but the creatures in this franchise are shrouded in mystery.
DAY ONE was a story about a woman with cancer and who must survive the alien apocalypse by staying quiet. The film isn't really about horror-certainly they're many horrific things and intense scenes, but it's really about the character of Samira and her journey and her struggles with her diagnoses. That is how you write effective horror. Character comes first. Put characters we care about in really messed up situations.
This truly is a fantastic film, while I think the first film is scarier, DAY ONE's characters is what truly makes this film shine and makes it worth seeing on a big screen. Even if you're not a big horror fan, you really should watch the QUIET PLACE films. There's virtually no gore if that's one of your turn offs. These films are about pace, atmosphere and writing. It's the best way to write horror.
