After watching "I Saw the Devil" for the first time, I gotta say I am SO floored by foreign thriller / horror movies. I feel a sense of a love of story telling in movies like "Audition" and "Oldboy" I just don't get from Hollywood cinema when it comes to dark, introspective drama. Without having to pander to millions, stories outside of the USA can be raw and visceral and complex. Everything from the camera work, the acting, the brilliant writing. It's like they give a shit about crafting scenes to flow perfectly.
Their films aren't movies where you can talk through them or be on your phone. Your attention needs to be on every frame-and sometimes their movies are even better on re-watch. They don't have the glitz and glamor of big stars and billions of dollars. They have a love for cinema and telling stories.
So far, I have been sucked into every action / thriller / horror movie from the east. If given a choice, I'd much rather watch a Park Chan-wook or Takashi Miike film, rather then another boring same old, vanilla thriller starring Liam Neeson or Chris Pratt. I know I'll get much more out of Miike or a Bong Joon-ho film.
