I would say fantasy is my favorite genre to write. Is all I write fantasy? Pretty much. I write either Sword and Sorcery or Pulpy Action.
I suppose it's the freedom in the genres. In fantasy, pretty much anything is allowed. I can write about a wounded dragon, I can write about an epic battle with monsters. My limit is the imagination.
In sword and sorcery (which is what I write as opposed to epic fantasy) I can write about a human and orc hanging out. Then within that, weave in some realism and some of my real life thoughts. I'm a very political person, but I could never write a story about a president.
I commend authors like Vince Flynn who can get such realistic details done correctly. To me, the joy would be sucked out of writing if I had to write super realistic stories with realistic weapons and such. I couldn't write something like "The Martian". Realism is what I live. I write to escape into a dream land. I put a lot of ideas into S&S. A lot of my real life opinions and gripes come out. Especially with Darak the Minotaur.
Aside from swords and dragons, I love pulpy action. Something like "Tomb Raider". Where it's set in modern day, but Lara Croft is a completely unrealistic action star dealing with very high-tension situations. My character, Farah Volek is my most 'realistic' incarnation. In that, she deals with 100% humans and no creatures.
Though, she's more like a female version of Doc Savage. Able to fight and out smart any villain that comes her way. She's basically a superhero without spandex and a convoluted timeline.
Farah Volek doesn't use a sword or fly on a dragon, but she IS fantasy-because the people she's able to kill and the things she does, are impossible for one person to do alone. The villains of Farah's world are more grounded however. A lot of the people she fights are serial killers, Nazis, Anti-LGBTQ+ groups etc. But as said-she is a pulp action star of our modern age. At least, that's what I hope she is.
So yes, fantasy and pulp are my genres. I know where my writing stands, and I hope you continue to join me in my endeavors.
