The Era of Pulp Fiction

There's something about adventure stories written in the days of pulp fiction. From Edgar Rice Burroughs to my favorite author, of course, Robert E. Howard. I can't quite figure out why I love this style. The prose and character descriptions are a lot more exciting than in most modern, works. Everything sounds so grand. Nothing held these guys back.

Yes I realize these stories can have gross themes of sexism and racism, I hope one day collections of these stories come with a 'content warning'.

However, I'm talking purely from a face value standpoint. How huge the imaginations were of such writers. How every description feels 'epic.' How they keep me invested.

How did Burroughs write about Mars and aliens all the way back in 1912?

How did a farm boy from Cross Plains, Texas write about sword and sorcery? It just fascinates me.

I feel today modern authors can be a bit bland. And it's because writing does change. But for action books? I much prefer a 50s alien story to a long and lengthy GAME OF THRONES rip off.

For my own DARAK series (on Wattpad btw ) I try to emulate this style of writing. It's a lot of fun.

And in my upcoming sci-fi novella BEYOND THE STARS I take a few of my ideas from John Carter of Mars.

This kind of writing I hope is read by future readers. Maybe one day we'll have some new pulp heroes?
